Dean and I attended the National Local Government IT and Business Transformation Conference that had councils attend from across Australia. It was really interesting to hear some of the common challenges being faced - There were no surprises. There are a lot of different approaches and strategies being adopted.
We held round table discussions and what makes a Smart City and the responses varied with the general consensous that nobody really understood what it actually means... IoT, WiFi, Smart lighting, all the way through to improving collaboration with staff and the community.
It provided some very useful insight into how some of the councils are progressing with their Business and ICT strategies.
The complexity of ICT and alignment of investments with business initiatives, prioritising the resources to deliver the right outcomes, is where councils seem to be struggling the most...
